Commissioning Ceremony

(Call forward Lay Pastors)

Priest:  For the pastoral activity of the church the cooperation of a great many people is needed, so that communities as well as individuals may continually grow in their love of God and the faith.

This cooperation is provided by those who devote themselves as Lay Pastors.  Enlightened by God's Word and a willingness to share the love of Christ with each member of our Parish, lay pastors impart to others the command of Jesus to tend His sheep.

At this time we bless the name of the Lord for giving us such co-workers and pray that through the Holy Spirit they will receive the grace they need in their service to the church.

Coordinator:  Jesus reminds us that there is no limit to the love and generosity of God.  Our loving Father always surpasses our most extravagant hopes and expectations. As recipients of this unconditional love, we are called to place no limits on the love we share with others. This call is particularly relevant for our Lay Pastors, the persons who formally proclaim God's good news to all our parishioners.  I now respectfully present to you all those whom God has chosen to be commissioned as lay pastors .

Priest:  (addressing Lay Pastors)  Dear brothers and sisters, as we marvel at God's generosity today, so too we marvel at your response to God's call.

We do not take your decision to be a Lay Pastor lightly. We know that you have prayerfully reflected upon the place of God in your life, and now desire to share more deeply the love that you have received from God. We charge you to bring God's Word to life, and to model for our parishioners unconditional love that can transform our entire world. May God's love and patience always be at the heart of your communications.

And so, I ask you, Are you ready and willing to exercise the ministry of Lay Pastors here in our Parish?

Lay Pastors:  I am.

Priest:  Are you willing to communicate, on a monthly basis, to our brothers and sisters, that they are remembered and loved by their church.

Lay Pastors:  I am.

Priest:  This parish community accepts your commitment with joy and thanksgiving. May God shower upon you abundant blessings for all of your labors.

(Priest blesses the Lay Pastor pins and with the coordinator presents them to each Lay Pastor.)

Final Blessing

Priest:  All of us are called to show God ‘s love. What a precious treasure we share! United in the Spirit of this loving Father, let us raise hands in blessing over our Lay Pastors and over one another, as I offer this prayer of commissioning:

God of love, You never cease to surprise us with your generosity.  You never cease to challenge us to grow in caring for others.  Fill these Lay Pastors with the conviction that they have been created in your image.

Fortify their courage to share the wonders they have received from you.  Help us all to find in every moment of our lives a reason to praise you, an opportunity to serve you, an occasion to love as you have loved us.

We ask this through Christ, Our Lord.

All:  Amen!
